Decoding the “Wai”: Everything You Need to Know

Sawatdee ka!

If you’ve been on my Instagram or Facebook, you’ve seen it: the Wai. It’s that beautiful gesture where palms are pressed together near the chest with a slight bow.

Visitors often worry: “Am I doing it right? Who do I Wai first?”

Here is the secret: Don’t overthink it. The Wai is a gesture of respect, not a test of precision. While there are complex rules about hierarchy in formal settings, for us as learners, the most important thing is the intention.

When you offer a Wai with a smile and a warm “Sawatdee,” you are signaling that you respect the culture and the person you are speaking to. It’s a bridge. It says, “I am a guest here, and I value our interaction.”

The Golden Rule:If someone Wais to you, you don’t always have to Wai back (for example, if you are a senior and they are a child). But if you are ever unsure, a polite nod with a smile is always perfectly acceptable.
